City Information
Agra the city of the Taj Mahal, is the undisputed choice of every visitor to India. It is well connected by road, rail and air from Delhi.
The great Mughals made it their capital and evidence of their passion for building graces the city to this day. The great Red Fort of Agra was begun by Akbar; Jahangir added magnificent palaces, courts and gardens, and Shahjahan further embellished it with elegant marble pavilions inlaid with semi-precious stones. Across the river, the Empress Noorjehan built an exquisite marble tomb for her father Itmad-ud-Daula. And Akbar himself lies buried in a magnificent mausoleum at Sikandra.
But the culmination of all this splendour is the Taj Mahal itself, a serene, pristine monument set in lush terraced gardens. Its pure white marble is inlaid with semi-precious stones in a delicate tracery of foliage and flowers. Visitors come to see the Taj Mahal from all over the world and marvel at its beauty and purity. And many come again and again to see it by moonlight, in the rosy light of dawn, and at the flaming hour of sunset.
