City Information

Vadodara (literally, the city of banyan trees) is located in the eastern part of the state of Gujarat, in the western region of India. It is a beautiful city of palaces, parks, temples, and museums. Often referred to as the cultural capital of Gujarat, Vadodara is a city of powerful dynastic rulers. It was once the capital city of the erstwhile Gaekwad rulers. The Vishvamitra River flows through the city of Vadodara. It is 100 km to the south of Ahmedabad and 392 km to the north of Mumbai. Modern-day Vadodara is an important industrial city and a major centre of pharmaceutical and glass industry in India.

The city is a part of the Vadodara Circuit that comprises Cambay, Champaner, Vadodara, and Dabhoi.

As the erstwhile capital of the Gaekwads, Vadodara has several magnificent palaces located within the city and in the nearby areas. Its museum, art gallery, and zoo are particularly noteworthy. Among the nearby areas, Dabhoi fort is one of the finest examples of Hindu military architecture in the country, while Chandod is a pilgrim centre on the bank of the river Reva. Another nearby destination is Sankheda, known for its lacquer work and wood-based handicrafts.

Sayaji Bagh
Vadodara is known for its palaces, museums, and parks. The Sayaji Bagh is a big well-laid park and an important tourist attraction. Within this park, one can see the Baroda Museum and Art Gallery. The museum, built by the Gaekwads in AD 1894, has a good collection of artefacts, which not only includes Indian sculptures and ancient manuscripts, but also houses a collection of Egyptian antiquities, while the art gallery has Mughal miniatures and some works of European masters. The museum is open everyday from 0930 hours to 1645 hours; closed on Mondays. The Sayaji Bagh also has a planetarium and a small zoo within it.

Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum
The Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, located in the southern part of the city, is an important tourist spot. It houses the royal collection of copies of European masters and works of Indian masters like Raja Ravi Verma. This museum also has a good collection of Far Eastern art and contemporary Indian works. Visiting hours: 0900-1200 hours; 1500-1600 hours; and 1800-1900 hours. Closed on Mondays.

Laxmi Vilas Palace
The Laxmi Vilas Palace, north of the Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, has a good collection of artefacts. Built in the AD 1880s, it is known for its marvellous architecture. The palace is set in a vast tract of open land measuring 720 acres and has a magnificent durbar hall with huge Venetian chandeliers, domes, and decorated ceiling. It also houses a good collection of old armour as well as bronze and marble statues. The place is not generally open for public viewing, and advance booking has to be made to visit it.

Pratap Vilas Palace
Constructed in AD 1910, Pratap Vilas (originally, Lal Bagh Palace) was the residence of the royal family. A fine example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, the palace has a remarkable collection of old armoury and sculptures in bronze. The palace now functions as the staff college of the Indian Railways. Permission of the principal is required to visit the small rail museum within the palace.

Among other important attractions of Vadodara, the Naulakhi Well is a well-preserved step well or baoli, located near the Laxmi Vilas Palace. Then, there is the Gaekwad samadhi called Kirti Mandir built in the early 20th century by the royal family. The Kothi Building is to the west and houses the Secretariat.
