City Information

Thiruvananthapuram (formerly, Trivandrum), the capital of the Indian state of Kerala, lies on the southwest coast of India. The place is well connected to most of the other major cities of India through rail, road, and air network.

The city derives its name from Thiru Anantha Puram, which means the town of Anantha. In fact, Anantha is the deity at the Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswami Temple, a major landmark of the city believed to be several thousands years old.

The ancient temple of Sri Padmanabhaswamy is one of the major attractions in the city of Thiruvananthapuram. Move around the city and you get to see various picturesque spots besides the glimpses of the city's past. Napier Museum was built in 1880 and shows a harmonious blending of Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles. Sri Chitra Art Gallery has a good collection Tanjore, Mughal, and Rajput schools of art. The Zoo in Thiruvananthapuram has many shady and delightful walks. You can have fascinating views of the city from the Observatory Hill. Science and Technology Museum has many interesting and interactive objects on display. Chacha Nehru Children's Museum has good collection of dolls, masks, and paintings.

Excursions around Thiruvananthapuram take you to places that are not only famous in the state but throughout the country. Kovalam, 16 km away from Thiruvananthapuram, is an internationally renowned beach. You can also visit Varkala, a tranquil sea resort besides Kanyakumari, a place famous for its beaches as well as temples. Padmanabhapuram Palace is an elegant wood palace constructed in the 16th century. Ponmudi gives excellent opportunities for nature walking and trekking.
