City Information

Ajmer is flanked by the Ana Sagar Lake on one side and barren hills of the Aravali range on the other side. Ajmer has the streams of the Luni River flowing south westwards and by tributaries of the Banas River flowing eastward from it. It is a small town, stretching to three km only. Ajmer has a unique blend of Sufi and Hindu cultures. It is more famous for its fairs rather than its landscapes.

The annual fair of Urs at the dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti held here every year attracts a lot of pilgrims and visitors from all over the world irrespective of their caste and religion. Another major attraction here is the Pushkar Lake 11 km away, to the northwest of Ajmer. Pushkar is considered to be one of the five principal places of Hindu pilgrimage. People take a dip in the sacred water here to obtain salvation.

Ajmer is a secular place, important not only to the Hindus but to the Muslims and the Jains as well. Before going on sightseeing to the Tara Garh Fort, the Ana Sagar Lake, Foy Sagar and the Government Museum at the Daulat Khana, most visitors pay a visit to the dargah of Garib Nawaz Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti. After sightseeing in the vicinity, one can go to Pushkar Lake on a daylong trip to pay reverence to Lord Brahma.

The best time to visit this town is during the Urs as then one can participate in the ritual looting of kheer. For more details regarding the dates of the festival, refer the Islamic calendar, or the Khadims at the dargah.

One can buy block-printed woven fabric items, antique silver jewellery with designs of a totally different, era from Ajmer. If anyone is interested in buying or selling cattle, especially camels, then the place to be in is the Pushkar fair held in the month of October/ November, which goes on for twelve days.
